Breaking Ground: A Community Rises Together
This intimate documentary follows Maribel, a full-time working mother of three, as she moves from a deteriorating mobile home to foundation-built modular homeownership in Boulder's Ponderosa neighborhood - one of the city's most culturally rich and economically diverse communities. Her journey embodies the hope, fear, and determination of working families fighting to stay in the places they've helped build.
The city built a modular home factory in partnership with the school district and Flatiron Habitat for Humanity to build homes for below-average-income families. High school students are helping to build these homes through their school program, learning real skills while constructing their community's future. Maribel is slated to buy the first modular home built in the factory - she represents hope for countless working families priced out of the places they've helped thrive.
When Maribel gets her keys, she doesn't just get a home - she reclaims a dream that working-class families across America have been quietly losing for decades. Breaking Ground is a film about what's possible when a city decides that affordable housing isn't charity. It's infrastructure for dignity. It's a choice about who belongs.
